Our objective at Ford Elementary is to teach students self-control and responsibility for their own behavior. Learning takes place more readily when the classroom is free of distractions. Therefore, the first grade team has developed a progressive discipline policy which includes the principles of Love and Logic as explained below.
Each time a student’s behavior is corrected, the action taken is as follows:
1st Warning – think about what you will choose to do to change the behavior.
2nd Lose 5 minutes recess
3rd Lose 10 minutes recess
4th Note/call to parent
In the classroom, each child has a “smiling bee” which is moved when a rule is broken. Students are dealt with as positively as possible, and they can earn smiling sticks as rewards for good behavior. They can earn a stick each day their bee stays on blue (no moves for the day) and for other exceptional behavior observed by adults. They may trade in the smiling sticks for prizes in our class treasure chest.
Our Classroom Rules
- Show respect for others.
- Show respect for classroom materials.
- Control talking.
- Listen and follow directions.
- Follow cafeteria, hallway and playground rules.
Please discuss these rules with your child and let them know the consequences for their behavior, both positive and negative. I will do the same the first week of school, so they know exactly what is expected.
If you have any questions or suggestions regarding this policy, please let me know. My goal is to establish a positive relationship between school and home.
